Registered v1.3d SHIPPING!
This is official shipping notice. :)
We will begin shipping orders on Monday the 6th of May. We have received
the CD's back from our duplicator (got 'em on Friday), and have been working
over the weekend packing orders. Here are some notes about the pre-orders:
- Orders will be filled in a first come first serve basis. This means that people who ordered back in January will get
their orders shipped first.
- We expect it to take about 7-10 working days to get all the orders shipped out the door.
- We have no way to tell if any specific order has shipped, so please don't ask us to check.
- Orders inside the US are being sent conventional US Postal Mail. Outside the US it's being sent Air Mail.
- No overnight or next day shipping is available on pre-orders.
- If you want to see us working on packing Duke3D orders, take a look at the live shot camera. It will be pointed at the
shipping table for the next week or so. :)

Here is some information we have now released that hackers might find useful.
These two files give information on the Commit specs (Commit is the program that
runs in front of Duke and allows multiplayer games), and the interface for the
external controller API. Please be aware that these specs are not supported,
please do not write to us asking for info on how to use these two files.
Download the Control Interface File or

Duke3D World Wide Web Sites/Pages
Sites are listed in alphabetical order by server name.
A Blue Dot means they have the full file 3DDUKE13.ZIP.
A Yellow Dot means they have the split files 3DDN13-A.ZIP thru 3DDN13-E.ZIP.
A Green Dot means they have the patch file DNSW13PT.ZIP.
A Red Dot means they have other Duke related files at the site.
A site has to have (v1.3d) files available from their own server to get the dots. Most sites
w/o dots still have files for download.

Frequently Asked Questions
- OK, OK, these are answers, but I think you get the point. :)
- The registered version will ship on CD-ROM only. There will be no disk based version.
- The price of the registered CD-ROM is $39.95..
- When's the registered version going to ship you ask? Click here to find out.
- We are very close to signing deals to do Macintosh and Sony Playstation ports of Duke Nukem
3D. However, please be aware that work on these will not even begin until the registered
version of the DOS game ships. I wouldn't look for these for awhile, probably not till 1stQ of 1997.
- Modem and Network play are in shareware.
- Limit of players in Modem/network is 4 for shareware. Full version supports 8.
- Yes, there is Co-Op play.
- The game requires 8 megs of memory. It will run better with more, since there's less swapping going on with more memory,
and it'll go faster because of this.
- The game will run on less than the requirements listed in the requirements section, but with
slowdowns, and feature removals (reduced screen size, less sounds, etc...). Whether this is playable or not will be up to you.
Please don't write and say "Will the game run on 'insert system specs'?" It will run, but
whether the reduced amount of features is acceptable is a question we can't answer. Only you can answer that.
- You cannot join games in progress. All players have to be there when the game starts. If you quit, you can't
get back in. This will not be added, as this kind of stuff can't be added to this level of technology. Our new games
like Prey (etc) have this, but Duke does not.
- Shareware has have 5 levels and 1 secret level. Episodes 2 & 3 each have 9 levels, and 2 secret levels for a total of
28 levels over all three episodes.
- There are 6 weapons in shareware, and 10 in registered.
- The weapons in shareware are: Kick (your foot), pistol, shotgun, 3 barrel chaingun, rocket launcher, and pipe bombs.
- The weapons held out for registered are: Shrinker Weapon (#7), Devastator Weapon (#8 - a double handed small
rocket launcher type of weapon), Wall Mounted Trip Bomb (#9), and a Freezethrower (#10). Sorry,
but the flamethrower & the laster gun have been scrapped. We couldn't make them work where we liked it, so it was scrapped.
- The game does not support any of the 3D video accelerator cards, like the "3D Blaster", etc..., nor are there any plans to add it.
- The DukeMatch RemoteRidicule uses the same RTS file format that Rise of the Triad did, soyou can use your favourite ROTT RTS files with Duke Nukem 3D!
- There is no nudity in this game. There are some nicely dressed women, but no actual nudity. There are parental
controls in this game similar to what was in Rise of the Triad.
- There are SVGA modes in the game (up to 800x600. Anything beyond that is insane). We recommend a Pentium to
use these modes. (A good one, with a triple digit processor number of like 133 or above :)
- VESA VBE compliance is required for SVGA modes. A software driver like UNIVBE is recommended for these modes
if your card does not support it natively. UNIVBE also helps speed up framerate in the 320x200 mode!
- The keyboard layout can be reconfigured to anything you want.
- Yes, there are cheat codes. No there aren't any Dukematch cheat codes. If you want a list of cheat codes, log on to
the 3D Realms Web BBS and go to the Main Menu. They're there.
- Yes, you can fall off buildings and hurt or kill yourself (depending on how high up it is).
- You cannot see into or out of the water in the game, but you can go in and out of it. Frame rate would be next to
zero if you could see in/out of the water.
- Duke Nukem does talk in the game, and you can turn that off if you want to.
Workarounds for known problems
Please read the dn3dhelp.exe file that came with your game first. This contains
solutions to common problems, and you may already have your answer in your hands. Also, make sure you are using
v1.3d of the game. If you have v1.0 or v1.1, upgrading to v1.3d alone might solve your problem.

Invalid Packet Size error in modem/serial play
First check your port speed. Leave it at 9600. If that doesn't work, try launching the level
you wish to play directly from the command line. An example would be:
SETUP /v2 /l03 /s2
This will let you change whatever you want in the setup program, and then go directly to
Episode 2, Level 3, Skill 2. Change this for whichever level/skill you wish to play. This
applies to both shareware and registered v1.3d.
My directories are gone after playing Duke3D!
Check your DOS environment. Type "SET" at the command line, and if it looks abnormal, reboot.
In specific, you're looking for the DOS environment variable DIRCMD. Try entering
"SET DIRCMD=", and all should be OK.
Build has weird video when I switch to 3D Editing Mode
Move your build files to the Duke Nukem 3D game directory. This goes for the Editart program
as well.
Please note that Build and Editart are not supported.
Mouse Control Too Fast after Patching to v1.3d
This is an easy one. Delete your config file, and then reconfigure. You'll be ok.
Modem play not working right in v1.3d
Make sure your port speed is at 9600 on both sides. Also try making the modem
init string AT &F.
NexGen/586 CPU's
If you have a NexGen, you should first try going into your CMOS settings, and looking for a
setting called Alternate Instructions. Make sure this is on. If this still doesn't
work, visit their WWW site at http://www.nexgen.com and download
the Q87 Floating Point Emulator. This should get you going.
ATI Mach64 Video Cards & SVGA
If you have a Mach64 and v1.1 still does not work in SVGA modes, look in your c:\mach64 directory
for a file called m64vbe.com. Use this before running Duke, and you should be OK. If you do not
have this file, contact ATI for an upgrade. Mach64 owners should not use UNIVBE/Display Doctor, they
should use this m64vbe.com file.
Matrox Millenium at 800x600
We've noted a problem with Matrox at 800x600 and lockups. At this time, we have no workaround
for this, even using UniVBE and the most up to date Matrox BIOS. The only thing we can say is
to not play at 800x600.
Other Video Cards & SVGA
If you get lockups, blank screens, or other weirdness when trying to use SVGA modes, you need
to use a VESA VBE compliant software driver. We recommend Display Doctor (formerly UNIVBE) v5.2,
which can be obtained at this World Wide Web site: http://www.scitechsoft.com.
Story Overview
The third chapter in the series, and the first with a 3D perspective (the original
Duke Nukem and the sequel, Duke Nukem II, are side scrolling platform games).
This game, set sometime in the early 21st century, begins in a ravaged LA, which was overtaken
by aliens while you were abducted during Duke Nukem II. Duke, upon returning to Earth, finds
himself with another mess to clean up, and another alien race that needs exterminating.
Duke is a can-do hero who realizes that sometimes innocent people have to die in order to save
Earth, so accuracy of gun fire is not a real concern to him. :) This game has a long list of
cool things that haven't been attempted in 3D action games, yet. The weapons, for example,
kick-butt: There's a mine that can be placed on any wall and sends out a laser trip beam--
perfect for multiplayer games. There's also a shrinker ray that reduces an opponent to the
size of a G.I. Joe, at which point they are foot fodder--watch them splat! As in
Shadow Warrior, you can swim under water, and even shoot players who are standing outside the water,
or vice versa.
How does the girl above dance? It's a variant of GIF called Animated GIF89A. If you're not
seeing a dancing girl above, you should use a web browser that supports it. Netscape v2.0 or
higher does. If you want to learn more about animating GIF files,
click here. This site has info and
software you can use to create these types of GIF files.
System Requirements
- 486 with 8 megabytes of memory and VGA graphics.
- We STRONGLY recommend a 486DX2/66 with (at least) 8 megs of memory and local bus video.
- SVGA modes require a Pentium with 16Mb of memory and PCI Local Bus Video.
- For the SVGA modes, a VESA compliant video card is required. Please see your video card's
manual for info on how to find out if your card is VESA compliant. If yours is not VESA
compliant, you will need to use a software driver to provide this compliance. We suggest a
driver such as UNIVBE.
- For game play, the following devices are optionally supported: Keyboard, Mouse, Joystick, Gravis GamePad.
- The following sound cards/devices are optionally supported for music: Gravis UltraSound,
Sound Blaster (all of them), SoundMan16, Pro Audio Spectrum, SoundScape, WaveBlaster,
Sound Canvas, Adlib, and General MIDI.
- The following sound cards/devices are optionally supported for sound effects: Sound Blaster
(all of them), Gravis UltraSound, SoundMan16, Pro Audio Spectrum, SoundScape, Disney/Tandy Sound Sources.
- There is no support for the PC Speaker.
